Field-based learning is used in more than 100 classes across the UCD curriculum. Despite the large number of field courses on campus, few computer resources have been allocated to facilitate them, forcing faculty from different departments to haphazardly duplicate resources to meet their minimal needs. When data is collected by classes working in the field, it only represents a single day¹s snapshot of the environment from a single disciplinary perspective. Field learning is inherently interdisciplinary, but there has been no attempt to combine field data across the curriculum.
REMOTE will be implemented at 4 sites that are used heavily in teaching and research. Russell Ranch is a university-owned property along Putah Creek west of campus that has 10 cropping systems under study, a wide riparian zone, and access to the stream. Tahoe Basin is an sub-alpine watershed with a world-renowned lake. Jepson Prairie is a UC-Davis Natural Reserve that has two major habitats (perennial bunchgrass prairie and vernal pools), some freshwater marsh areas, and two sloughs. Cosumnes River Preserve is a land-owning partnership that seeks to restore and protect floodplain land along the last undammed river that flows from the Sierras to the Delta. Beyond these UC-Davis sites, REMOTE will interface with existing data systems for San Francisco Bay, Bodega Bay, USGS streamflows, Sacramento County flash flood network, the California Data Exchange Center, the California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (CERES), the Center for Spatial Technology and Remote Sensing, SuomiNet (real-time atmospheric precipitable water vapor measurements), the Information Center for the Environment (ICE), UC Integrated Pest Management Online, and other web sites as they become available. These sites serve 800 students in 5 departments.
The REMOTE network will serve 1068 students across the university. Once
the underlying framework is in place, additional sites can be added to
serve additional teaching and research needs as funding permits. Over
time we hope that more faculty will build REMOTE into their classroom
teaching, field excursions, and homework assignments. We expect theto
project will contribute substantially to new curriculum initiatives such
as the Watershed Initiative.
